School stories

After the first term, the International School published a Mid-Year Report – a document containing the most important information about the programmes offered at our school, overview of extracurricular activities, results of a student survey, as well as the most successful achievements of our students in the first term.

As a Cambridge secondary school, the International School is an environment that nurtures a truly different approach to learning and education. An interesting and dynamic curriculum allows students to grow and develop their full potential. In addition, students can choose between different school clubs that approach the teaching material in an informal, modern and creative manner.

From humanities to STEM sciences – a wide breadth of knowledge and worldview

The spirit of cosmopolitanism, multicultural environment, and innovative teaching practices are among the reasons why students of the International School regularly achieve outstanding results in various scientific fields and disciplines. A staggering 98% of our students are satisfied with their social science lessons.

In addition to social sciences and humanities, students are also highly satisfied with their STEM lessons. Over 95% of our students consider Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths lessons extremely useful for their future academic and professional development.

Apart from quality teaching, students regularly visit museums, theatres and cinemas, participate in creative interdisciplinary projects, and learn from experienced and dedicated teachers and mentors.

What are the favourite subjects at the International School?

Year 10 and 11 students have seven compulsory IGCSE subjects adapted to their educational needs and abilities. This is particularly important for students who aren’t native English speakers.

Students in Year 10 prefer English (37.1%), followed by History (22.9%) and Mathematics (20%). On the other hand, the favourite subject of Year 11 students is History (28.9%), followed by English (23.7%), and Computer Sciences (21.1%).

Older, Year 12 and Year 13 students choose A-level subjects in line with their interests, abilities, and the preferred course of study at the university. When it comes to their favourite subjects, English is the first choice of both Year 12 (25%) and Year 13 students (36.7%). Another thing they have in common is the same second favourite subject – Psychology, followed by Computer Sciences (Year 12) and Sociology (Year 13).

Experienced teachers and dedicate mentors

Every year, students of the International School choose their favourite teachers as mentors. In addition to the support programme, mentors help their protégés to reach their full potential, develop their socio-emotional skills, and support them on their path to success.

Students also recognise the cooperation between themselves and their teachers-mentors, because the mentees gave their mentors 4.84/5. Students particularly highlighted the following qualities of their mentors:

  • learning support,
  • help with school work,
  • openness,
  • friendliness,
  • care,
  • honesty,
  • accessibility,
  • genuine interest in student well-being.

Mentors at the International School inspire their students to achieve the best results, and are always prepared to discuss student problems and dilemmas, whether they are academic or concern another area of student life.

Action plan aimed at developing student competencies

The International School developed an Action Plan for 2020/21 in line with the LINK education strategy, which assesses the development and outcomes of student-teacher projects. Through student activism, participation in student competitions and international projects, students develop:

  • metacognition,
  • problem solving,
  • cooperation,
  • communication skills,
  • digital literacy,
  • ethical awareness,
  • research spirit, and
  • solidarity and empathy.

Interactive projects and diverse extracurricular program at IS

The International School boasts a selection of interesting projects, extracurricular activities and workshops organised for both students and teachers. As part of the Parents Teach This Week project, the International School welcomes students’ parents every month who talk about important topics from the standpoint of their own professions. The main aim of this project is to encourage students to think about professional orientation and their future career, as well as to raise their awareness of different professions.

One of the most interesting extracurricular activities that caught the attention of students is International School Model United Nations. This academic activity allows students to engage in a serious challenge of a simulated debate in the United Nations. Students play the roles of committee chairpersons and delegates who discuss major global issues making use of their communication skills, significant knowledge and a diplomatic approach.

Student activism is also reflected in the establishment of the Eco-Committee. The International School operates in accordance with the strict regulations of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that aims to encourage and involve people in the preservation and development of the environment through educational activities.
