School stories

Year 3 students at International School explored some of the key building blocks of music as they learnt about notes, beat, pulse and rhythm through an interactive classroom activity.

Using the interactive board, students worked with different note values and rhythmic patterns, learning how individual notes can be combined to create rhythm. Rather than simply learning musical concepts in theory, they had the opportunity to draw, recognise and arrange notes themselves, turning the lesson into an active learning experience.

Understanding How Rhythm Works

During the lesson, students explored the difference between beat, pulse and rhythm and discovered how these elements work together in music.

By creating their own sequences of notes on the interactive board, they were able to see how the duration and arrangement of notes influence a rhythmic pattern. This practical approach helped make abstract musical concepts clearer and easier to understand.

The activity also encouraged students to listen carefully, recognise patterns and connect what they could hear with the musical symbols they were learning to use.

Learning Music by Creating It

Working directly with musical notation gave students the opportunity to develop their understanding through practice. As they experimented with different notes and rhythmic combinations, they strengthened their concentration, coordination and musical awareness.

The lesson showed that learning music goes far beyond memorising symbols. By exploring, creating and experimenting, Year 3 students began to understand how rhythm is built and how written notes can be transformed into music.

Through activities like this, students develop both their musical knowledge and the confidence to express themselves creatively.
