Year 6 students at International School explored the fascinating history of the Vikings through a Humanities project focused on their achievements and contributions to European history. The activity encouraged students to look beyond the Vikings’ reputation as warriors and discover their influence on exploration, trade, technology and cultural development.
Discovering the Legacy of the Vikings
As part of their Humanities studies, students investigated different aspects of Viking civilisation, including their remarkable shipbuilding skills, navigation techniques, trading networks and exploration of new territories.
Through their research, students gained a broader understanding of how Viking innovations and achievements influenced the societies they encountered. They also explored the importance of geographical knowledge, technological developments and cultural exchange in shaping historical events.
The project encouraged students to approach history from different perspectives, recognising that civilisations are defined not only by conflicts and conquests but also by their contributions to human progress.
Developing Research and Critical Thinking Skills
Beyond expanding their historical knowledge, the project provided an opportunity for students to strengthen essential academic skills. By researching historical information, analysing different aspects of Viking society and organising their findings, students practised critical thinking, independent learning and effective communication.
Through project-based learning, International School encourages students to develop a deeper understanding of the past while building the analytical and research skills needed to interpret the world around them.
The Year 6 Humanities project demonstrated how exploring historical achievements can inspire curiosity, broaden perspectives and make the study of history both meaningful and engaging.
