Year 5 students at International School combined creativity and digital skills as they worked on the visual identity for their podcast project.
Using digital drawing and design tools, students created original illustrations and graphics that could represent the themes, ideas and personality of their podcasts. The activity encouraged them to think beyond words and sound, considering how colours, shapes and visual elements can communicate a message before a listener even presses play.
From Ideas to Visual Identity
As they developed their designs, students explored how visual choices can influence the way an audience understands a project. They experimented with composition, colour combinations and simple digital illustrations, making decisions about what best represented the tone and subject of their podcasts.
Each design reflected a different idea and creative approach, giving students the freedom to translate their concepts into visual form.
The activity also introduced them to an important part of modern media production. A podcast is not only about recording and storytelling. Its title, cover image and overall visual identity also play a key role in attracting an audience and communicating what the content is about.
Creativity Meets Digital Skills
By working on their own podcast visuals, Year 5 students developed digital literacy while also strengthening creativity, planning and attention to detail.
The process required them to make independent choices, test different ideas and refine their work until they were satisfied with the final result. In doing so, they experienced how technology can be used not only for consuming content, but also for creating something original.
This hands-on project brought together communication, design and technology, giving students the opportunity to see how different skills can work together in a real-world creative process.
For Year 5, the activity was another example of learning through making, where an idea developed into a visual concept ready to become part of their very own podcast.
