School stories

Year 8 students recently took part in an engaging interdisciplinary lesson led by English teacher Biljana Komadinić and Art and Design teacher Lora Mitić. Titled Bringing Descriptions to Life, the session bridged language and visual expression, inviting students to explore how atmosphere, tone, and emotional impact in writing can be translated into colour and form.

From Text to Imagination

The lesson began with a vivid description of an old, abandoned village. As students read, they focused on carefully selected details, analysing the writer’s language choices and the mood created through imagery.

Once the text was removed, they faced a creative challenge: to recreate the scene entirely from memory. Relying on their understanding of the atmosphere and descriptive elements, students translated words into visual compositions, demonstrating how deeply they had engaged with the text.

The Language of Colour

The next stage of the lesson shifted attention to colour and its emotional power. Through guided discussion, students reflected on how different tones and shades can evoke specific feelings and shape perception.

With these insights in mind, they returned to their drawings, thoughtfully adding colour to reflect the writer’s intended mood and overall effect.

Connecting Analysis and Creativity

By combining close reading with artistic interpretation, students discovered meaningful connections between language, imagery, and emotion.

This interdisciplinary approach not only strengthened analytical skills but also encouraged creative thinking, showing how learning across subjects can enrich understanding and leave a lasting impression.
