Year 7 and Year 9 students recently took part in a unique interdisciplinary lesson “Biology Meets Art,” led by Biology teacher Nadežda Šućur and Art and Design teacher Lora Mitić.
During the lesson, students explored the fascinating connection between science and creativity. Using natural materials such as leaves and berries, they learned how to extract pigments with the help of organic solvents. Once they had successfully obtained the pigments, students used them to create their own works of art.
This helped students gain a deeper understanding of pigments and the techniques used for their extraction. They also discovered how challenging it once was for artists to produce their own colours and observed how these natural pigments behave differently when applied to paper – often separating into several distinct shades.
This creative approach allowed students to see how scientific knowledge can be applied in artistic expression. Interdisciplinary lessons like this one play a vital role in fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and appreciation for both the sciences and the arts, showing students that learning can be both educational and inspiring.
