School stories

Biology came to life at International School as students from Years 8, 9 and 11 explored fascinating scientific topics through research, presentations, experiments and creative assignments.

From the reproduction of honey bees and the effects of climate change to investigating salt solubility, students demonstrated curiosity, creativity and scientific thinking while developing a deeper understanding of the natural world.

Year 11: Discovering the Fascinating World of Reproduction

Year 11 students explored the topic of reproduction, investigating biological processes and the ways different organisms reproduce.

As part of their biology project, students prepared and delivered presentations, including an exploration of reproduction in honey bees. They examined the life cycle of bees, the stages of metamorphosis and the biological mechanisms behind the development of queens, workers and drones.

Through independent research and presentations, students strengthened their understanding of complex biological concepts while developing essential communication, analytical and public speaking skills.

Year 9: Exploring Climate Change and the Journey of Water

Year 9 students focused on environmental biology through their Climate Witness project, investigating the impact of climate change on ecosystems.

Their presentations explored the Great Barrier Reef, examining how rising ocean temperatures, increased carbon dioxide emissions and coral bleaching threaten marine life and biodiversity. By researching these environmental challenges, students gained a deeper understanding of the relationship between human activity and the natural world.

Students also explored the water cycle through a creative writing assignment entitled A Water Molecule’s Journey. By imagining the journey of a water molecule through different stages of the water cycle, they combined scientific knowledge with storytelling, demonstrating that biology can also inspire creativity and imagination.

Year 8: Investigating How Temperature Affects Salt Solubility

Year 8 students explored the relationship between temperature and salt solubility through a science project based on the question: Does temperature affect salt solubility?

The project encouraged students to investigate scientific principles, observe changes and consider how temperature influences the behaviour of substances in water.

By applying scientific methods and analysing observations, students developed their investigative skills and learned the importance of evidence-based conclusions.

Biology Beyond the Textbook at International School

At International School, biology lessons encourage students to go beyond theoretical knowledge and explore science through practical activities, independent research and collaborative learning.

These projects reflect the school’s approach to education, where students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, communicate their findings confidently and connect classroom learning with real-world challenges.

By making biology interactive, engaging and relevant, International School helps students develop the knowledge, curiosity and essential skills needed to become confident, independent learners and responsible global citizens.
